Summer Course on "Bayesian Networks in Medicine"
18 - 20 July, 2012 - Porto, Portugal
Lecturer: Peter Lucas, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands
Overview: Clinical research has been traditionally supported on biostatistics for accurate assessment of effects and decision support. However, the complicated and uncertain nature of real-world biomedical data has made it necessary to look beyond traditional biostatistics, without loosing the necessary formality. This course will cover the topics pertaining to the modern methods of probabilistic problem solving in clinical decision support. The specific topics will include an overview of basic biostatistics, probabilistic inference and Bayesian reasoning. Bayesian networks can be seen as an alternative to logistic regression where statistical dependence and independence are not hidden in approximating weights, rather explicitly represented by links in a network of variables. The course will expose several applications of Bayesian networks in different clinical domains and outcomes.
Objectives:
- Identify different types of uncertainty inherent to clinical practice.
- Understand the main objectives of Bayesian inference for clinical decision support.
- Describe the theory of Bayesian networks, their goals and main characteristics.
- Acknowledge clinical applications of Bayesian networks in different domains and outcomes.
Competences: By the end of this course, students should be capable of understanding the place of Bayesian networks in clinical decision support, while capable of modeling a given clinical problem from the Bayesian point of view.
Eligibility: Professionals, researchers and students in the areas of Medicine, Statistics, Computer Science or Mathematics.
