GUEST EDITORIAL PREFACE

Introduction to Identity, Reference, and the Web

Harry Halpin, University of Edinburgh, UK
Henry S. Thompson, University of Edinburgh, UK

In this preface, the authors review and summarize the three articles offered
in this latest issue of IJSWIS. Using these articles as a foundation, the
authors seek to answer the questions "What does a universal resource
identifier (URI) on the Web identify?" and "How can identification improve
on the Web?"

To read the preface, please consult this issue of IJSWIS in your library.

PAPER ONE:

In Defense of Ambiguity

Patrick J. Hayes, Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, USA
Harry Halpin, University of Edinburgh, UK

This article introduces a uniform resource identifier (URI) scheme as a
solution to the ambiguity that occurs on the Web. Specifically, the authors
conclude that what is needed is not just a simple redirection, but a uniform
and logically consistent manner of associating descriptions with URIs that
can be done in a number of practical ways that should be made consistent.

PAPER TWO:

Ontological Indeterminacy and the Semantic Web

Allen Ginsberg, The MITRE Corporation, USA

This article presents arguments and a detailed use-case showing how ontology
indeterminacy causes problems understanding how Semantic Web (SW) terms
refer or have meaning. The authors address this dilemma by presenting a new
account, based on a "meaning of use" philosophy language, that avoids these
problems by formalizing the distinction between the intention to use a term
in a customary manner and the decision to adopt a formal theory that
explains or explicates that usage.

PAPER THREE:

Identity of Resources and Entities on the Web

Valentina Presutti, ISTC National Research Council (CNR), Italy
Aldo Gangemi, ISTC National Research Council (CNR), Italy

In this article, the authors investigate the meaning of the identity of a
Web resource, and how the current situation, as well as existing and
possible future improvements, can be modeled and implemented on the Web. In
particular, the authors propose an ontology, identity of resources and
entities on the Web (IRE), that provides a formal way to model both the
problem and the solution spaces. Also, the authors formalize the concept of
Web resource, as distinguished from the concept of a generic entity, and how
those and other concepts are related, for example, by different proxy for
relations. Finally, based on the analysis formalized in IRE, the authors
propose a formal pattern for modeling and comparing different solutions to
the problems of the identity of resources.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Mission of IJSWIS:

The International Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems is an open
forum aiming to cultivate the Semantic Web vision within the Information
Systems research community. In the common practice of anticipating Semantic
Web as a technology driven phenomenon, a scientific insight is provided,
which reveals the practical implications and the research challenges of SW
in the context of Information Systems. It goes beyond the traditional
research agenda of Information Systems and critical themes are analyzed
through a Semantic Web perspective in horizontal and vertical pillars. The
main idea is to communicate high quality research findings in the leading
edge aspects of Semantic Web and Information Systems convergence.
Traditionally, Semantic Web is treated as a technological phenomenon with
the main emphasis on technologies, languages and tools without similar
attention given to theoretical constructions or linkages to
multidisciplinary references. However, our focus is on the Information
Systems Discipline and we are working towards the delivery of the main
implications that the Semantic Web brings to Information Systems and the
information/Knowledge Society.

Coverage of IJSWIS:

The main themes covered in the journal include:
Semantic Web Issues, challenges and Implications in each of the IS research
streams
Real world applications towards the development of the Knowledge society
New Semantic Web enabled tools for the citizen/ learner/ organization/
business
New Semantic Web enabled business models
New Semantic Web enabled information systems
Integration with other disciplines
Intelligent Systems
Standards
Semantic enabled business intelligence
Enterprise Application Integration
Metadata-driven (bottom-up) versus ontology-driven (top-down) SW development
