The 1st Edition of the Encyclopedia of Knowledge Management appeared in late
2005 and embodied a breakthrough research reference work documenting the
past, present, and possible future directions of knowledge management. Over
170 contributors from 22 countries have conferred their expertise to the
first edition, and with 940 definitions and more than 3,600 references, this
encyclopedia has become the foremost source for reliable advanced research
in the field of knowledge management.

Amongst the accolades afforded to the first edition are:

"In a discipline as young as KM, the future depends on the addition of books
like The Encyclopedia of Knowledge Management to gain support, interest and
spur the imagination of future workforces to enable the leveraging of
organizations' intellectual assets to increase their performance and help
them move toward becoming a "knowledge-based enterprise"." (P. Jackson,
Chief Knowledge Strategist, Enterprise Logistics, Lockheed Martin, USA;
VINE: The Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems, Vol. 36,
No. 1, 2006).

"As the first encyclopedia in the KM field, it is not enough just to have a
range of decent articles on relevant topics. Schwartz and his team also need
to map out the field for those who are completely new to it, and to his
credit they have faced this challenge head-on." (J.S. Edwards, Editor,
Knowledge Management Research & Practice, No. 5, 2007)

"This volume is an essential reference source for ideas as to what needs to
be addressed and what we have learned about knowledge management over the
past few decades." (Laurence Prusak, Babson College, USA)

About the 2nd Edition

The 2nd Edition of the Encyclopedia of Knowledge Management will build upon
this strong foundation. It will provide updated versions of the 1st edition
articles taking into account the developments of the past five years, and
will expand coverage to include many additional areas of knowledge
management that have developed and matured since the creation of the first
edition. The 2nd Edition will also include a significant number of invited
articles from specific experts in the field to supplement those submitted in
response to this call for articles. Knowledge Management has evolved into
one of the most important streams of management research, affecting
organizations of all types at many different levels. The challenges of
knowledge management span everything from knowledge identification and
representation, to the impact of Knowledge Management Systems on
organizational culture, to the significant integration and cost issues being
faced by Human Resources, MIS/IT, and production departments.

In addition, the 2nd Edition is expected to include:
1. a greatly expanded "Application-specific KM" section;
2. a reorganization and expansion of the "Technological Aspects" section;
3. an expansion of the "Processes"; "Theoretical"; "Managerial" and
"Organizational/Social" sections, splitting "Organizational Aspects" and
"Social Aspects" into separate categories;
4. the addition of more examples and diagrams to existing entries and as a
requirement for new entries.

Please note that authors of articles from the 1st edition will be contacted
directly with a request for updates to their articles.

Coverage: The Encyclopedia of Knowledge Management, 2nd Edition, will
feature short articles (3,000-3,500 words) authored by leading experts
offering an in-depth description of key research issues related to different
areas in Knowledge Management. In addition, this volume will provide a
compendium of terms, definitions and explanations of concepts, processes and
acronyms. Knowledge Management theories, models, systems, and applications
abound - each dealing with some aspect of an increasingly complex field
spanning organizational theory, strategic management, intellectual property,
innovation, philosophy of knowledge, human resource management, and
information technology.
