CALL FOR PAPERS

First International Workshop on
Recommender Systems and Personalized Retrieval (RSPR 2008)

http://www.dirf.org/diwt2008/workshop2.asp

in conjunction with

The First IEEE International Conference on the Application of Digital Information and Web Technologies (ICADIWT 2008)

August 4-6, 2008 VSB- Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic

Jointly Organized by:

  • Department of Informatics, University of Bari
  • Free University of Bolzano

INTRODUCTION

Recommender systems are applications that take input directly or indirectly from users and, based on user needs, preferences and usage patterns, provide personalized products and services recommendations, easing the information search and decision processes. Recommender systems have been revolutionizing the way shoppers and information seekers find what they want, because they effectively prune large information spaces and help users in selecting items that best meet their needs and tastes.

Recommender systems strongly rely on the use of various tools and algorithms for learning how to rank items or predict the user evaluation on items. Information retrieval systems, on the other hand, are also trying to address similar filtering and ranking problems for information items, such as links, pages, and documents. But they generally focus on the development of global retrieval techniques, often neglecting the individual needs and preferences of users. Machine learning is more and more used in information retrieval for learning from implicit and explicit user behavior (links visited or time spent on pages), hence there is a lot of overlap (goals and techniques) between these two areas. Recommender systems research should better focus on the interaction between these research areas in order to provide more personalized, robust, general, and proactive retrieval strategies.

The main goal of this workshop is to provide a forum where current researchers and practitioners can meet and discuss the latest ideas and issues on recommender systems and information retrieval research.

TOPICS

The workshop will cover theoretical, practical and implementation issues on recommender systems and personalized retrieval. The following is a partial list of topics of interests:

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

We encourage submissions of technical papers in any of the topics of interest of the workshop (but not limited to them) from researchers and practitioners in academia, industry, government, and consulting. Accepted formats are Postscript and PDF. Papers must be submitted by e-mail at the following address:

Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and selected on the basis of these reviews. Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop. Authors are invited to submit their manuscript in the IEEE style. Any further information concerning typesetting can be obtained directly from the following address:
