Web Services Security Development and Architecture: Theoretical and Practical Issues
A book edited by Carlos A. Gutiérrez, Eduardo Fernández-Medina, and Mario Piattini

Departamento de Tecnologías y Sistemas de Información
Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha
Paseo de la Universidad, 4
13071 Ciudad Real (Spain)

1. Introduction

The open nature of the Internet is promoting the development of web services as a paradigm that enables complex business workflow integration and that provides the hyper-connectivity needed for today's inter- and intra-enterprises. This standard-based, quality-centered paradigm is evolving rapidly due to its capability of handling and addressing the issues of heterogeneous system integration. In fact, according to the most recent reports from IDC, the market for WS-based solutions will grow steadily over time and will reach $11 billion in 2008. This growth has caused a number of initiatives to be developed over the last few years. In fact, the main building blocks of basic Web service security have already been identified, defined, standardized, consolidated and adopted by both the scientific and industry world.
Despite solid advances, numerous challenges have yet to be resolved by Web services-enabled SOA systems. SOA, the key enabler of business processes, and its associated paradigms (for example, Web Services Orchestration and Choreography, SOA model-driven architecture, deployment, integration, management, and monitoring) are still undergoing a profound security analysis and study process.
This diversity of security topics has prompted us consider the application of SOA security, from a global perspective, as a very complex and hard process to understand with a very difficult learning curve. At present, there persists a lack of a global approach that offers a methodical development to constructing security architectures for WS-based systems. Web Services Security Development and Architecture: Theoretical and Practical Issues aim to meet this need.

2. Objective of the Book

This book aims to cover the global approach to web services security development. From both the theoretical and practical perspectives, this book is intended to address security concerns during the full development lifecycle of web services-based systems, from security goals and risk-based requirements up to security pattern-driven architectures implemented by the most sound web services security standards for each specific scenario.

3. Target Audience

This book is intended for researchers and practitioners who need to understand the current trends and development in web services and service-oriented architecture security.

4. Recommended Topics

This book's chapters will review the state-of-the-art and existing tools in this area, and will provide insight into important new developments and future research trends.

Topics include but and are not limited to the following:

*SOA risk analysis management
*SOA security requirement engineering
*SOA security governance
*SOA-based business process security
*SOA security requirement, architecture, and protocol formal methods
*SOA security tools
*SOA security policy frameworks
*Frameworks for managing, establishing and assessing inter-organizational trust relationships
*SOA security architectures (modeling) and frameworks
*MDA-based security SOA
*SOA security architectural and design patterns
*Semantics-aware Web service security
*SOA security deployment, monitoring, and maintenance
*Privacy and digital identities support on SOA

5. Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before September 15, 2008, a 2-5 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Proposals should be sent by email to one of the three editors. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), www.igi-global.com <http://www.igi-global.com/> , publisher of the Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference) and Medical Information Science Reference imprints, as part of the Advances in Web Services Research Book Series, www.igi-global.com/awsr, in 2010.
