Introduction
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a very important role in
the world economy. SMEs provide majority of employment in industrialized
countries and are the laboratories where much of innovation happens. Due
to their small size, they are vulnerable to external pressures emanating
in the market and the general environment. In order to stay competitive,
SMEs are investing in information systems (IS) that span the value
activities of a firm. SMEs are different from large firms and theories
of information systems applicable to large firms may not be applicable
to them. Therefore, it is imperative to study the numerous challenges
and issues, both theoretical and practical, that SMEs are facing in
using information systems. This book adds to the IS scholarship on SMEs.

Objective of the Book
This book will aim to provide significant new insights into how and for
what purpose SMEs employ information systems. The book will focus on
empirical, theoretical, and conceptual studies where the theoretical and
practical implications of the research will be emphasized. Case studies
on SMEs are particularly welcome. This new publication will be
distributed among academic and professional institutions worldwide and
will be instrumental in providing access to the latest research findings
in this area.

Target Audience
The target audience is academics, researchers, and practitioners engaged
in various disciplines such as information systems, international
business, entrepreneurship, and management. Moreover, the book will be
of interest to government policy-makers, non-government organizations
(NGOs), and SMEs and large firm managers who might gain from studies of
SMEs from around the world.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Competitive advantage and SMEs;
Business value using IS among SMEs;
Operational efficiency using IS among SMEs;
SMEs and IS-enabled generic strategies;
IS enabled firm capabilities among SMEs;
Institutional environment, SMEs and competitiveness;

SMEs, product life cycle and IS usage;
Industry-based SME strategies;

explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter.
