Overview

We are in a connected age: real-world entities often interconnect with each other through explicit or implicit relationships to form a complex network, such as information networks, social networks, economic networks, technological networks, and biological networks. They exhibit interesting statistical characteristics such as small-world and scale-free. The past decade has witnessed an explosive growth of research on various complex networks. How can we analyse, manage and mine information in large-scale complex networks effectively and efficiently? This gives researchers in database, information retrieval and knowledge management great challenges as well as opportunities. In line with CIKM's tradition of promoting interdisciplinary research, this workshop aims to have a major impact on future research by bringing together researchers across both computer science and the emerging scientific discipline of network science to foster discussion and exchange ideas.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: OPEN SOURCE RECOMMENDER SYSTEM SOFTWARE WORKSHOP AT THE ACM RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS 2009 CONFERENCE

The interest in recommender systems has increased immensely over the past years, and recommenders have been showing up in various online services. In addition, more and more research is being done on the subject, and there is now even a yearly conference fully dedicated to recommender systems. However, both researchers who want to experiment with recommender systems and companies that want to use recommender systems in their applications have to build their own recommender systems from scratch, thus struggling with implementation issues that others have already solved.

There are a few companies that offer commercial recommender system solutions. Unfortunately with their products it is often difficult to determine what these recommender systems actually consist of, what kind of algorithms are being used, and how if any, algorithms are being combined. Whereas extending such software is often difficult, changing the software for research purposes is even more difficult, if at all possible, and the results cannot be shared with others in the research community and industry.

The focus of this workshop organized at ACM Recommender Systems 2009 is setting up a software project to develop open source recommender system software and creating a community around it. Such software can be used by researchers as a starting point in their research that can easily be extended with their own ideas. Sharing the implementation of their ideas in an open source project will give them more exposure to a wider audience. Companies creating or using recommender systems on the other hand get a head start from using open source recommender system software in their own applications, and benefit from sharing their own software by a decreased need to keep their work in sync with a changing open source base.

There are a few open source recommender system projects. Most focus on only one recommendation algorithm (e.g. TASTE project (taste.sourceforge.net) which only focuses on collaborative filtering). Others have been set up, with no more information than that they intend to develop and release recommender system software. Some of the organizers of this workshop have released an open source recommender system framework called The Duine Framework (www.duineframework.org), which contains a set of Java software libraries to create recommender systems for applications that can use multiple recommendation algorithms. The Duine framework is far from finished. It currently only contains a few basic recommendation algorithms and one evaluation method. There are many more issues that need to be addressed. Another such project is The MyMedia project (www.mymediaproject.org) which develops a .NET framework with advanced recommendation algorithms that will be open sourced, at least for research purposes. Some of the organizers of this workshop are also involved in the MyMedia project.

Furthermore, the development of open source software is best done by a community of researchers and developers from various organizations. That way, more resources can be put in the development of the open source recommender system software and a community is also a better guarantee for the long term continuation of such a project.

Therefore, the workshop has two main goals:

1. Getting an overview of what elements are and should be in an open source recommender system software package.

2. Building a community that will participate in and contribute to a project for the further long-term development of Java-based open source recommender system software.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Participation in this workshop is two-folded. The morning section of the workshop is open to every conference attendee interested in discussing the direction that open source recommender system software should take. An official submission is not required for those who only wish to participate in the morning section, though we would appreciate an e-mail stating the intention to join this morning section (not limited to the official submission deadline).

For those who want to participate in the full day workshop and thus are interested in participating in an open source recommender system software project, we require explicit submissions consisting of:

Sensors are windows to the physical world for ambient intelligence (AmI) applications. The recent emergence of networked sensors as a result of rapid advances in sensor technologies and wireless networks, have set the stage for the realization of smart environments where unobtrusive sensors, either embedded or transportable by mobile carriers, enables fine-grain capture of environmental or ambient information that provides the basis of intelligence for higher-order cognitive systems, i.e. systems with capabilities to perceive, reason, learn, and react intelligently to their environment. Such systems in turn are envisioned to have wide ranging applications from intelligent wildlife and building structure monitoring to humanistic and social endevours such as health and elderly care service provisioning.

Following the success of the first SeNAmI at PDCAT 2008 in Dunedin, New Zealand, this workshop once again aims to bring together researchers from academia and industry to present and discuss recent trends and advances in sensor networks and ambient intelligence, and from such engagement foster innovations towards technology maturity of sensor-based ambient intelligence systems. The study of social networks originated in social and business communities. In recent years, social network research has advanced significantly; the development of sophisticated techniques for Social Network Analysis and Mining (SNAM) has been highly influenced by the online social websites, email logs, phone logs and instant messaging systems, which are widely analyzed using graph theory and machine learning techniques. People perceive the web increasingly as a social medium that fosters interaction among people, sharing of experiences and knowledge, group activities, community formation and evolution. This can be seen as rising prominence of SNAM in academia, politics, homeland security and business. Many entities of our society evolved into networks in which actors are increasingly dependent on their structural embedding.

The international conference on Advances in Social Network Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2009) http://www.asonam.org/ will primarily provide an interdisciplinary venue that will bring together practitioners and researchers from a variety of field to promote collaborations and exchange of ideas and practices. ASONAM 2009 is intended to address important aspects with a specific focus on the emerging trends and industry needs associated with social networking analysis and mining. Please be advised that the deadline for submission of manuscripts for the special issue on IT Collaboration in Organizations for the Journal of Information Technology Case and Application Research (JITCAR, http://www.jitcar.org) has been extended until July 10. Luca Iandoli, of the University of Naples Federico II, is the guest editor of this special issue.

Within the last decade, mass-collaboration, enabled by Internet-based collaborative platforms (e.g. open standards development, forums, wiki, and social networks), has been acknowledged by many experts as one of the most relevant emerging novelties in the IT world, especially in terms of social impact. Thousands of anonymous users create and update daily the largest encyclopedia of the world (Wikipedia); distributed teams formed by thousands of open-source programmers collaborate to develop software products able to compete with large multinationals; millions of users exchange massive amounts of digital content through social networking platforms like Flickr and YouTube; hundreds of thousands of activists contributed to Barack Obama's electoral campaign playing a significant role in influencing the electoral outcome and now pursuing open-lobbying on the Presidential agenda through the Internet.

Such successful stories have motivated many companies and organization to explore the potential of collaborative platforms to enable easier, cheaper and more pervasive knowledge sharing and magnification than those supported by traditional IT tools. This exploration of collaborative platforms is motivated as well by increasing dissatisfaction with and consequent failure of centralized and highly structured KM platforms, such as corporate portals and traditional intranets as well as communication technologies, such as email and Instant Messaging.

There is anecdotal evidence arising from a number of noticeable case studies that collaborative platforms are more effective than traditional IT tools for knowledge sharing and creation. By empowering knowledge workers and exploiting patterns of knowledge socialization, they can create a uniquely accessible body of grass-root knowledge and effectively frame it, thanks to contributors' ability to index and tag contents and localize expertise on the basis of their collective salience and reputation. While considerable research has addressed on-line communities and, in particular, the open source movement and Wikipedia, to date we lack adequate theoretical explanations of mass-collaboration and enough empirical evidence to support the above claims in an organizational context. There are also some concerns that organizations and companies may lack some of the critical factors necessary for the successful emergence of collaborative on-line communities, such as scale, independence, voluntariness, self-motivation, and absence of centralized control and hierarchy.

In this JITCAR special issue, we are looking to explore the following research questions: Can collaborative platforms increase organizations' performance and effectiveness? When do they constitute a viable alternative technology to traditional KM and communication tools in organizations and when may they fail? Which are the organizational and cultural requirements needed to successfully introduce mass-collaboration in organizations? We are interested in case and application research articles that focus on (but are not limited to):

* Organizational and contextual antecedents of e-collaboration: under which conditions, in which kind of organizations and for which tasks e-collaboration may thrive/fail;
* Expected and actual Benefits deriving from e-collaboration in terms of knowledge sharing, creation and magnification;
* E-collaboration and organizational design: incentives to attract and retain members, community governance, social networks, conflict and coordination management, new organizational models;
* Collaborative platform start-up: variables influencing the choice, implementation and successful adoption of collaborative platforms;
* Content management strategies: contents & members quality assessment (trust & reputation systems), information aggregation (belief aggregation, market-based aggregation), social tagging and collective information retrieval
* Variables influencing design choice in collaborative platforms.
* Collective knowledge exploitation (e.g. distributed decision making, collective prediction, group deliberation)

Description and Objectives

The ACM/IEEE MEDES-SW 09 aims at facilitating interactions among young researchers and at offering students the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about current and future works.

We encourage Master degree students and doctoral PhD students to submit a paper relating their work. Papers should clearly describe the problem (a clear formulation of the research topic), explain why it is important, detail what are the existing solutions and why they are not convenient, and give a description of the proposed approach and its expected contributions.
There should be enough substance to provide discussion, but the work does not need to be complete.

Digitalizing and sharing medical data is crucial to curb the growing healthcare costs and facilitate medical research. However, privacy and security issues remain major barriers during this process. As required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), it is necessary to protect the privacy of patients and ensure the security of the medical data. The FoIKS symposia provide a biennial forum for presenting and discussing theoretical and applied research on information and knowledge systems. The goal is to bring together researchers with an interest in this subject, share research experiences, promote collaboration and identify new issues and directions for future research.

FoIKS 2010 solicits original contributions dealing with any foundational aspect of information and knowledge systems. This includes submissions that apply ideas, theories or methods from specific disciplines to information and knowledge systems. Examples of such disciplines are discrete mathematics, logic and algebra, model theory, information theory, complexity theory, algorithmics and computation, statistics and optimisation.

Previous FoIKS symposia were held in Pisa (Italy) in 2008, Budapest (Hungary) in 2006, Vienna (Austria) in 2004, Schloss Salzau near Kiel (Germany) in 2002, and Burg/Spreewald near Berlin (Germany) in 2000. FoIKS took up the tradition of the conference series Mathematical Fundamentals of Database Systems (MFDBS), which initiated East-West collaboration in the field of database theory. Former MFDBS conferences were held in Rostock (Germany) in 1991, Visegrad (Hungary) in 1989, and Dresden (Germany) in 1987.

The FoIKS symposia are a forum for intense discussions. Speakers will be given sufficient time to present their ideas and results within the larger context of their research. Furthermore, participants will be asked to prepare a first response to another contribution in order to initiate discussion.

The ICDM2009 Exhibit and Demo section will consist of an Exhibit Session and a Demo Session. The Exhibit Session will offer opportunities to distribute product, service, and company literature, give demonstrations and carry out recruitment activities. The Demo Session will provide data mining researchers and practitioners an exciting and highly interactive way to explore new ideas and results.

Call for exhibits
1. General Exhibitors will attend a bidding of three levels of limited number of booths: one Gold Booth (US$ 6000), two Silver Booths (US$ 4000), and three Bronze Booths (US$ 3000, tabletop only). A standard booth space will be 8' x 10' with a table (6' x 30") and two chairs.
2. The final winners selection will be based on the relationship between the distributed goods and ICDM2009, the benefit to ICDM2009 audiences, and the order of paying fees.
3. Non-profit research organizations and publishers (evidence is required to show the non-profit nature) will get a special rate (US$ 1500) for a tabletop but with lowest priority for booth allocation.

In the last decades, substantial progress has been made in content analysis, multimedia streaming, and human-centered computing to facilitate the development of large-scale multimedia systems. Together with the recent progress on semantic web, scalable machine learning, and multi-modal interaction, it is now possible to build a new generation multimedia applications that enable large-scale semantic representation, analysis, and delivery of multimedia data from heterogeneous data sources. However, there is still a long way to go for mature solutions of multimedia database systems that are capable of processing semantics-rich, large-volume multimedia data. It could be even more challenging if such systems are under stringent functional and non-functional (e.g., QoS) requirements.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in multimedia semantic computing and provide a forum for multidisciplinary research opportunities, with a focus on how to apply the semantic technologies to the acquisition, generation, transmission, storage, processing, and retrieval of large-scale multimedia information. 3rd International Symposium on Languages in Biology and Medicine (LBM) 2009

LBM is a unique interdisciplinary forum that brings together researchers in biology, chemistry, medicine, public health and informatics to discuss and exploit cutting edge language technology. Language, in its many forms, is the universal means to represent, question, and convey knowledge. Likewise applied technologies such as translation, summarization and information extraction are key technologies for supporting scientific research and healthcare provision. The automation of all these tasks is advancing our ability to discover new knowledge.

Despite these advances the envelope for these technologies is constantly being challenged by user demands and interdisciplinary work, both leading into sustained evolution of language technology. All the communities involved profit from exchange about progress, but fail to efficiently exploit the approaches from complementary scientific disciplines, although such synergistic interactions are potentially the richest source for significant advancements. More interdisciplinary work is required to efficiently manage data and knowledge.

The International Symposium on Languages in Biology and Medicine (LBM) 2009 is the next opportunity for interdisciplinary interaction. LBM was established in 2005 and the remit of this event remains highly relevant today. The symposium focuses on the languages that are in active use for biology and medicine. We call for outstanding contributions to, but not limited to, the topics listed below:

* Natural language: text mining, retrieval and managements;
* Ontology language: semantic indexing, ontology construction, induction and management;
* Logic language: knowledge representation;
* Sequence language: RNA structure prediction, protein domain prediction;
* Database language: database interface, query language;
* Visualization language: information visualization, molecular visualization;

Call for Papers: Sport Science Review

The editors of the Sport Science Review are looking for contributors for its inaugural english edition. The submitted works should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words in length (bibliography included). Contributions are welcome from professionals and scholars in the field, as well as from PhD and post-doctoral students. The Review may also consider exceptional contributions from Masters level students.

The Sport Science Review is an academic publication (B+ category) issued by the National Institute for Sport Research and Sport Science Council, Romania. The Review aims to provide a rigorous academic perspective on sport issues. Its goal is to bring together professionals, scholars and students of Sport Studies, and to provide them with a knowledge platform for a substantial and meaningful exchange of ideas.

The Review aims to support both established scholars in the field of Sport Studies, as well as advanced students in the field. It is therefore an opportunity for new scholars to become known and gain a reputation in academia.

The first issue will include three major sections:
