Objectives
****************

The advances in modern technology and the constantly evolving requirements implied by dynamic business and operational environments impose new challenges for engineering and provisioning Web Services and Service-Based Applications.

Those services and applications have to become drastically more flexible: they should be able to operate and evolve in highly dynamic environments and to adequately identify and react to various changes in these environments. In such a setting, adaptation becomes a key capability of Web Services and Service-based Applications as it enables these services and applications to continuously change themselves in order to satisfy new requirements and demands dictated by the environment. The adaptability relies on the presence of monitoring mechanisms and facilities to identify, detect, and even predict critical events and situations that occur in the environment.

A variety of approaches and techniques addressing different forms of monitoring and adaptation have been proposed to date. Still, for delivering robust, dependable, and highly adaptable Web Services and Service-based Applications the definition of more holistic approaches is crucial. This requires the integration of the efforts of researchers from various disciplines and research areas. More specifically, this requires the integration across the different layers of a Service-based Application, including the business layer, the service layer, and the infrastructure layer. In addition, different competences, such as requirements engineering, design, quality assurance, realization, and management need to be brought together to devise those holistic approaches.

MONA+ 2010 aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines with various research backgrounds. The main objective for MONA+ is to discuss highly relevant and pressing research challenges and solutions on monitoring and adaptation of Web Services and Service-based Applications.

OVERVIEW

There are many successful case studies of SOA adoption, mainly in commercial enterprises, where the main goal for SOA implementation is internal integration and business process improvement. Despite recent reports that "SOA is Dead", the reality is that SOA is currently the best option available for systems integration and leverage of legacy systems. For example, Forrester Group recently reported that SOA adoption was increasing across all of its vertical-industry groups. The technologies to implement SOA will most probably change over time, but the concepts will remain. This means that from a maintenance and evolution perspective there are two concerns: (1) deployed service-oriented systems will have to be maintained and evolved and (2) legacy systems will migrate to SOA environments to make their legacy functionality available to other systems and applications. The main goal of this workshop is to create a focal point and an ongoing forum for researchers and practitioners to share results and open issues in the area of maintenance and evolution of service-oriented systems.

During MESOA 2007, topics such as service identification, concept location, and service testing were presented as techniques to support maintenance and evolution of service-oriented systems. In addition, the effect of business value and autonomic computing on maintenance and evolution of service-oriented systems were discussed. In MESOA 2008 the focus was on the research and advances in areas that have been identified by the SOA Research Agenda as critical for maintenance and evolution in a dynamic, heterogeneous and potentially distributed development and maintenance environment. In MESOA 2009, the focus was on the characterization of service-oriented systems as maintenance-intensive systems, automated evolution to SOA environments, governance of service-oriented systems evolution, and migration experiences in the telecommunications and electronic archive domains. The goal for MESOA 2010 is to continue sharing current efforts in the maintenance and evolution of service-oriented systems and identify areas of future work to address existing gaps and problems.

Background

REST has gained popularity not only as an alternative approach to building Web Services, but it also has now become a buzzword that is often used to denote a lightweight and loosely coupled approach to design and implement Service-Oriented Architectures. In this book we are focusing on applying REST beyond public Web applications (e.g., in enterprise environments), and on reusing established and well-understood design patterns when doing so. The goal is to establish a good understanding of what REST is about, and the constraints it focuses on as an architectural style. The reader will be able to understand how RESTful systems can be designed and deployed, and what the results are in terms of benefits and challenges encountered in the process.

Since REST is relatively new as an approach for designing Web Services, the more advanced part of the book collects a number of challenges to some of the assumptions and constraints of REST, and looks at current research work on how REST can be extended and applied to scenarios that often are considered not to be a good match for RESTful architectures.

In summary, the goal of the book is to allow readers to come to a deeper understanding of REST on a practical as well as on an advanced level, and to provide an outlook what research on REST is currently working on. The main aim of the book is thus to serve as a starting point for people looking for a deeper principled understanding of REST, its applications, its limitations, and current research work in the area. It is intended for information and service architects and designers who are interested to learn about REST, how it is applied, and how it is being advanced.

The increasing amount and complexity of electronic data sets turns visualization into a key technology to provide an intuitive interface to the information. Unsupervised learning has developed powerful techniques for, e.g., manifold learning, dimensionality reduction, collaborative filtering, and topic modeling. However, the field has so far not fully appreciated the problems that data analysts seeking to apply unsupervised learning to information visualization are facing such as heterogeneous and context dependent objectives or streaming and distributed data with different credibility. Moreover, the unsupervised learning field has hitherto failed to develop human-in-the-loop approaches to data visualization, even though such approaches including, e.g., user relevance feedback are necessary to arrive at valid and interesting results.

As a consequence, a number of challenges arise in the context of data visualization which cannot be solved by classical methods in the field:

- Methods have to deal with modern data formats and data sets: How can the technologies be adapted to deal with streaming and probably non i.i.d. data sets? How can specific data formats be visualized appropriately such as spatio-temporal data, spectral data, data characterized by a general probably non-metric dissimilarity measure, etc.? How can we deal with heterogeneous data and different credibility? How can the dissimilarity measure be adapted to emphasize the aspects which are relevant for visualization?

- Available techniques for specific tasks should be combined in a canonic way: How can unsupervised learning techniques be combined to construct good visualizations? For instance, how can we effectively combine techniques for clustering, collaborative filtering, and topic modeling with dimensionality reduction to construct scatter plots that reveal the similarity between groups of data, movies, or documents? How can we arrive at context dependent visualization?

- Visualization techniques should be accompanied by theoretical guarantees: What are reasonable mathematical specifications of data visualization to shape this inherently ill-posed problem? Can this be controlled by the user in an efficient way? How can visualization be evaluated? What are reasonable benchmarks? What are reasonable evaluation measures?

- Visualization techniques should be ready to use for users outside the field: Which methods are suited to users outside the field? How can the necessity be avoided to set specific technical parameters by hand or choose from different possible mathematical algorithms by hand? Can this necessity be substituted by intuitive interactive mechanisms which can be used by non-experts?

The goal of the workshop is to identify the state-of-the-art with respect to these challenges and to discuss possibilities to meet these demands with modern techniques. The workshop will consist of invited tutorial talks, presentations of new research in a poster session, and panel discussions to identify the current state-of-the-art and future perspectives. Registration will be open to all NIPS 2010 Workshop attendees.

We solicit submissions for an oral or poster presentation that report new (unpublished) research results or ongoing research. Submissions can be up to 4 pages long. It is allowed to use additional pages for visualizations (i.e., it is acceptable to have additional pages with images). Papers should be formatted in NIPS 2010 format (LaTeX style files are available on the conference website). Papers must be in English and must be submitted as PDF files. If accepted, submissions will be published on the workshop website.

AIMS AND SCOPE
In the last few years, we have witnessed an exponentially growing amount of social media data from social networks, mainly driven by the huge popularity of Web and the rapid advances of multimedia and Internet technologies. Different from conventional data types, social media data are multi-model in nature, including content such as images, audio, and videos, concept such as discussion topic, tag, and annotation, and context such as links, profile, timestamp, and click-through. All these content, concept and context are essential data sources for mining semantics, user intents, trends, knowledge, etc., from social media data, as well as enabling intelligent applications on social media services.

In particular, geo-location and mobile technologies recently have started to enable users to share life experience and build social life with each other using media content with geographic, time and/or other context. Location data have gained greater importance in many applications. Social media are becoming part of our online and mobile experience, and fostering novel applications, from information sharing, resource finding, to social communication and entertainment. Clearly, social media research is multidisciplinary and goes beyond computer science.
This rich media type has raised many new research challenges, ranging from large-scale social media content indexing and management, social media content analysis and mining, concept discovery and monitoring, social media search, context-based services, to exciting new opportunities (e.g., integration with location data, mobile social networking, online video summarization and visualization, etc). The aim of this special issue is to bring out state-of-the-art research in this area and discover directions for future research.

TOPICS OF INTERESTS
The special issue will serve as a forum for recent advances in the field of social media analysis, indexing, mining, search, and emerging new applications such as mobile media systems, geo media services, etc, especially those that are based on integrating the information from the "3C" (Content, Concept and Context). We invite original and high quality submissions addressing all aspects of this field, which is closely related to Web search, social networking analysis, multimedia retrieval, data mining, database management, location-based services, etc.

'Passion for Compassion' and 'Dare to Care' are the underlying themes of the 2010 Academy of Management meeting to be held in Montreal, Canada. Production and operations economists feel that issues such as financial strength and efficiencies are the overriding concerns of organizations and thus develop tools and models that help organizations manage these dimensions. We need to expand beyond this mindset and think creatively on how we can aid the broader communities in which we live. We decouple morality and ethics from many of our modeling and research efforts. Sometimes this decoupling is necessary to make academic, theoretical, and technological progress. But given the various financial, social, and health crises occurring at all levels of society, and are seemingly inexhaustible, using our tools and expertise as an academic community to aid in managing, if not preventing, these crises requires that we reengage ourselves with some of these ethical concerns and compass
ion issues.

The issue of compassion and caring is part of broader corporate social responsibility themes that have started to permeate management and engineering disciplines. Focusing on operations and production as tools for social change and management has not garnered as much attention as other topics in production economics such as technological and inter-organizational focus and developments. Some 'social caring' topics have been covered in previous issues of this journal, such as sustainable supply chains topics. We seek to expand these concepts with the introduction of models for compassionate operations.

Compassionate operations does not necessarily mean just being soft and emotional, but that we can use existing and emergent knowledge related to production and operations to aid others, and not necessarily for profitability. There are many topics that can be covered in this issue and we will allow the creativity of our research community expand on these issues which include:

Humanitarian and Relief Logistics
Social learning (education) and enterprise networking models
Non-profit services planning and management
Poverty relief operations models
Models to aid in production and industry development in underrepresented regions

This is a preliminary announcement for the next Australasian Mathematical Psychology (AMP) Conference, which will be held in:

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

February 18-20, 2011

The conference will run on Friday and Saturday (18 & 19 February) and will be followed by a day of free workshops sponsored by The University of Melbournes Neurosciences and Behavioral Sciences research domain on Sunday (20 February). The topic of the workshops and presenters will be announced shortly.

The conference will take place at the University of Melbourne, accommodation will be available at a special conference rate of A$139/night for a double room at the Ibis Hotel (details below). There will be a conference dinner on the 19th (Saturday).

AMPC2011 promises to have many interesting talks from local and international experts, so please join us in Melbourne next February.

Registration costs are $99 (full) or $49 (students), which will include morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea on both conference days and the workshop day. Registration will open shortly, and the deadline for submission of abstracts is January 15, 2011.

OBJECTIVES

SWPM'10 follows on from a very successful first edition, co-located with the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) in October, 2009.

The current Knowledge Economy is encouraging organizations and governments to publish and expose their data, make them accessible to the public and reusable for new, unanticipated purposes. Initiatives like the Linked Open Data (LOD) and eScience have created a vast amount of information that can be leveraged by Semantic Web applications in a variety of real world scenarios. The importance of managing various forms of metadata has long been recognized as critical in the Semantic Web. In this workshop we focus specifically on metadata that describes the origins of the data, i.e. the provenance of data. Provenance metadata is essential to correctly interpret the results of a process execution, to validate data processing tools, to verify the quality of data, and to associate measures of trust to the data.
At the same time, the scale at which data across different domains (e.g. biomedical informatics, astronomy, oceanography and etc) is created along with the rapidly increasing LOD cloud mandates the processing and analysis of provenance metadata in a scalable way.

SIGMOD Call for Tutorial Proposals

We solicit proposals for tutorials for presentation at the 2011 SIGMOD conference. Proposals must provide an in-depth survey of the chosen topic with the option of describing a particular piece of work in detail. A meaningful summary of open issues in the topic should be included.

Proposals must be no more than five pages, using an 11 pt or larger font for the body of the text of the proposal, and must include enough detail to provide a sense of both the scope of material to be covered and the depth to which it will be covered. Proposals should also indicate the tutorial length (typically 1.5 or 3 hours; if the tutorial can be either length, please be sure to identify which material is included for each length). Proposals should also identify any other venues in which all or part of the tutorial has been or will be presented, and explain how the current proposal differs from those other editions of the tutorial. Tutorial proposals must clearly identify the intended audience and any prerequisite knowledge for attendees. Proposals should include a brief (no more than 3 sentences) professional biography.

Tutorials may be taped and these videos, as well as the presentation slides, included in SIGMOD Digital Library (Anthology and Digital Symposium collection - DiSC). All accepted presenters will be required to sign the necessary permission forms to permit this distribution.

WORKSHOP SCOPE

The focus of WASA-NGI 2011 is on the impact of global sensing on architectures, services, and applications for the Next Generation Internet. In particular, geosensor networks and public sensing have evolved as novel and important research fields. They offer applications easy and efficient access to sensor data at the scale of billions of sensing devices. This data are of high relevance to a wide spectrum of applications, for instance in the field of environmental monitoring, traffic control, or smart energy grids.

It is of high importance that communication architectures and services for enabling such systems are highly scalable and able to cope with massive amounts of sensor data in order to meet the requirements of emerging applications. These requirements range from hard performance and quality demands to ensuring security and privacy for the provided data. They are particularly difficult to meet in the face of the heterogeneity of sensors, sensor networks, and communication architectures. Coping with these challenges requires an integrated research effort involving researchers from a wide spectrum of different research fields.

This workshop aims at bringing researchers and practitioners together that are working in areas such as sensor networks, architectures and services for the Future Internet, P2P overlays, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and novel communication paradigms like opportunistic and delay tolerant networking.
