Theme:

The goal of the PIKM 2008 workshop is to encourage Ph.D. students to present their dissertation research at a relatively early stage. The targeted students are those
with a focus in any of the CIKM research tracks, i.e., databases, information retrieval or knowledge management. Interdisciplinary work across the three tracks is
particularly encouraged.

PIKM 2008 will enable graduate students to present their dissertation proposals and/or ongoing research on their dissertation sub-problems, giving them an opportunity
to get feedback on their work from experienced researchers. The accepted papers will also be published in the workshop proceedings.

Although PIKM 2008 is geared mainly towards Ph.D. students, Masters students aiming to be Ph.D. candidates may also submit proposal papers for a prospective doctoral
dissertation based on their ongoing work.

The Dutch Belgian Database Day (DBDBD) is a yearly one-day workshop organized in a Belgian or Dutch university, whose general topic is database research. DBDBD invites submissions (1 page abstract) on a broad range of database and database-related topics, including but not limited to data storage and management, theoretical database issues, database performance, data mining, information retrieval, data semantics, querying, ontologies etc. Based on the submissions, the workshop will be organized in different sessions each covering a particular topic.

At the DBDBD, junior researchers from the Netherlands and Belgium can present their recent results. It is an excellent opportunity to meet up with your Belgian/Dutch colleagues, and to get informed about the (recent) database-related research performed in Belgian/Dutch universities. The workshop is also open to non-Belgian/Dutch participants (presentations are in English).

The DBDBD 2008 is organized under auspices of SIKS, the Dutch research school for information and knowledge systems, and the Belgian Graduate School in Computing Science (GRASCOMP). The event is sponsored by the FNRS. This year, DBDBD will be held at the Arsenal, located at the heart of the charming city of Namur (Belgium), on Friday October 10th, 2008.

4th egovernment workshop transformation and innovation, (EGOV 2008)

The submission deadline for the 2008 eGovernment Workshop (eGov08) at
Brunel University (UK) has been extended to accept papers until 28 July.
The conference organisers are seeking papers of about 5000 words around
the 2008 conference theme "Transformation and Innovation". The best of the
papers will also be included in a special issue of the Emerald journal
Transforming Government: People, Process and Policy.

The workshop, on 8 September, will have two great keynote speakers. The
BCS Vice-President Elizabeth Sparrow will open the conference with a
presentation of several highly successful public sector projects. We also

Information security and privacy continue to be ranked in the top ten of CIO concerns (Luftman & Kempaiah, MISQ-e, 2008). Data breaches and identity theft are reported almost daily in the media. Firms struggle to find efficient and effective ways to prevent breaches while enabling e-commerce. Regulators increasingly warn against the encroachment of surveillance technologies on contemporary society. Issues of identity and meaning in social networks occupies large numbers of Facebook and Myspace “friends.” Transnational organisations seek ways to simultaneously manage risk while addressing the vagaries of multiple compliance regimes. These are just some of the complex issues with which privacy and security researchers concern themselves.

Scholars, practitioners and doctoral students interested in information security and privacy issues are invited to submit their research to the third annual Workshop on Information Security and Privacy (WISP 2008). WISP 2008 will be held Saturday , December 13, 2008 in Paris, France. The workshop is sponsored by the AIS Special Interest Group on Information Security and Privacy (SIGSEC). WISP 2008 aims to provide an opportunity to present leading edge research, exchange ideas, encourage collaboration, and build community across the various privacy and security research groups.

We have extended the submission date due to numerous requests. The *new* date July 15, 2008.

IEEE BIBM 2008 will provide a general forum for disseminating the latest research in bioinformatics and biomedicine. It is a multidisciplinary conference that brings together academic and industrial scientists from computer science, biology, chemistry, medicine, mathematics and statistics. It will exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of bioinformatics and biomedicine and provide a foru for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modeling, simulation, ontology and other computational methods, as applied to life science problems, with emphasis on applications in high throughput data-rich areas in biology, biomedical engineering. EDOC 2008 will be the twelfth event in the series of conferences, which since 1997 has brought together leading computer science researchers, IT decision makers, IT architects, solution designers and practitioners from academia, industry and government to discuss enterprise computing challenges, models and solutions.
Enterprise computing is based on a wide (and ever growing) range of methods, models, tools and technologies. The resulting applications also cover a broad spectrum of vertical domains and industry segments, from electronic and mobile commerce to real-time business applications for collaborating enterprises. In recent years, technologies related to business processes integration, management, execution and monitoring have become one of the top areas of interest in enterprise computing. Today, the creation, operation and evolution of enterprise computing systems create challenges that range from high-level requirements and policy modeling to the deployment and maintenance of solutions in and across customer businesses.
The IEEE EDOC Conference emphasizes a holistic view on enterprise applications engineering and management, fostering integrated approaches that can address and relate processes, people and technology. The themes of openness and distributed computing, based on services, components and objects, provide a useful and unifying conceptual framework.
The 2008 EDOC conference will welcome high quality scientific submissions as well as papers on enterprise computing industry experiences. Expert panel discussions and keynotes will address hot topics and issues in the domain. The TEAA conference (Trends in Enterprise Application Architecture) will become part of EDOC in 2008 and further enrich the scientific program and publication scope of the conference.

WITS 2008 Call for Submission - Technology Instruction in Business Curriculum Competition:

Instructors teaching Information Technology (IT) in a business curriculum face significant
challenges in organizing and developing instructional materials that effectively integrate
technology concepts with business issues and problems. Often, instructional approaches tend to
align themselves at extreme ends of the technology-business spectrum. At one extreme, the
technological skills are given the main focus with limited emphasis on understanding the solution
from the business contexts and requirements. At the other end, pedagogical materials are developed
primarily with a business focus with little attention to understanding the key IT enablers and
their potential to impact business solutions. Both approaches â€“ lack of adequate and appropriate
business contexts or the treatment of technology as a black box, lead to less than ideal learning
outcomes for the business students.

The objective of the technology instruction competition is to bring together well-developed ideas,
which can assist the MIS community at large, in their quest to improve the business orientation of
their IT curricula. We solicit submissions of instructional modules that would demonstrate
innovative integrations of technology and business in graduate or undergraduate courses.

There is a disconnect between modelling and implementation:
relationships are prevalent in system models (for example, UML
associations, Relations in ER Diagrams) but implementation languages
do not provide first-class support for them. For example, in Java (and
other Object-Oriented Languages), relationships must be implemented by
hand using references embedded in participants. This approach is
cumbersome and error-prone, and leads to a disconnect between the
system model and the system implementation. As software systems grow
and models become increasingly complex this disconnect causes problems
not only for implementers but especially for code maintainers.
