A real-time business can provide a better quality of service omparing with its peers) by shortening the latencies of data, analysis, decision and execution. As such, real time service-oriented architecture and application (RTSOAA) evolve the traditional service-oriented computing approach to the next level of excellence.

RTSOAA presents a new set of emerging issues and challenges that are expected to be identified, resolved by the service-oriented computing community. These include (1) Scientific and engineering approaches to meet timing constraints and to select services and resources for optimizing the tradeoff between cost and efficiency. (2) Technical and managerial issues for RTSOAA: modeling, infrastructure composition, coordination, planning and scheduling, choreography, deployment, configuration, monitoring and control, and governance. (3) RTSOAA platforms and infrastructure for supporting large-scale application domains such as Healthcare, Cyber-Physical Systems, Green Computing, and Cloud Computing.

This workshop is intended to provide an effective forum for researchers and industry practitioners to exchange innovative ideas and state-of-the-art research, share experiences and lessons learned from academic research projects as well as real world projects, and discuss issues, challenges, needs, and solutions in Real-Time Service-Oriented Architecture and Applications.

Scope of the Workshop
---------------------
RTSOAA signifies an interdisciplinary area that covers disciplines such as real-time systems, service-oriented architecture, software engineering, decision technology, database management and so on. This one is here to stay
_____________________________________________

Call for Papers for the AMCIS 2009 Mini Track

'Enterprise Systems Governance'

(part of the 'Enterprise Systems (SIG EntSys)' track)

AMCIS - Americas Conference on Information Systems
San Francisco, USA, August 6-9, 2009
http://www.amcis2009.org

Enterprise Systems (ES) are typically understood as bundles of technology and business knowledge which integrate all facets of the enterprise to support operations and management holistically. Being off-the-shelf software ES have to be adapted to the user's organization. With the recent trend to offer ES based on the principles of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), this adaptation faces a paradigmatically different set of challenges. The boundaries of SOA-based ES continuously dissolve and services are invoked across enterprises. Service calls are nested within processes which also often transcend the boundaries of a single organization, leading to so-called cross-organizational business processes.
Diligent governance has been recognized in recent years as a major requirement for successful adaptation and operation of an SOA, especially for large ES. Governance in this changing world of service-enabled ES needs to encompass guidelines and rules which can be adopted and realized by the affected management processes. Governance must focus on the adoption and operation of an SOA as part of the enterprise architecture of a company. It must provide guidelines and mechanisms to ensure the integrity of an SOA and its adaptability to business and administration processes. New challenges emerge, e.g. through a change in roles and responsibilities, service lifecycles, standards, and finance. In order to provide homogenization of these issues, new governance approaches and corresponding applications have to be developed. But in order to be effective, the central challenge is to guarantee compliance to legal, technical as well as internal regulations.
This mini-track deals with the application and support of governance in service-enabled Enterprise Systems. It welcomes papers from academia as well as practice.

Best papers will be invited to submit an extended version to AIS Transactions on Enterprise Systems.

Suggested Topics:
* Governance approaches for SOA architectures and enterprise services
[More...] Tue, 06 Jan 2009 08:00:00 +0100http://eventseer.net/e/8397/37820/2009 americas conference on information systems (AMCIS 2009) http://eventseer.net/e/8397/37829/The Diffusion, Impacts, Adoption and Usage of ICTs upon Society

The aim of this mini-track will be to offer a global perspective of how ICTs are being diffused, used and adopted within society (households, small (micro) to medium sized organsiations, and social communities). To remedy this situation, Information Reuse and Integration (IRI) seeks to maximize the reuse of information by creating simple, rich, and reusable knowledge representations and consequently explores strategies for integrating this knowledge into legacy systems. IRI plays a pivotal role in the capture, representation, maintenance, integration, validation, and extrapolation of information; and applies both information and knowledge for enhancing decision-making in various application domains. This conference explores three major tracks: information reuse, information integration, and reusable systems. Information reuse considers optimizing representation methodologies; information integration studies strategies for creatively applying models in novel domains; and reusable systems focus on ontological opportunities for deploying models and corresponding processes.

The IEEE IRI conference serves as a forum for researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to present, discuss, and exchange ideas that address real-world problems with real-world solutions. The conference feature contributed and invited papers. Theoretical and applied papers are both included. The conference program will include special sessions, open forum workshops, and keynote speeches. A forum will be conducted with the intent of bridging IRI and Systems of Systems and why the future of intelligent computing - including computing applications - will lie at the juxtaposition of these two topical areas. A part of this can be attributed to existing interface inflexibility with behaviors invariant of the factors of the individual user, their preferences or their tasks, which affect performance. Some example factors, which play a larger role in 3DUIs as compared to 2DUIs, are user arm length, user height, handedness, eye dominance, color differentiation, technique preferences, task approaches, computer and game experience, accessibility issues, cybersickness, susceptibility to fatigue, spatial aptitudes and other cognitive factors to name a few. As the physical, mental and experiential factors of users that influence 3DUIs are diverse, 3DUIs designed to be optimal for all users result in interaction optimal for no single user. Adaptation and personalization are envisioned to play an important role in the next generation of user interfaces.

To achieve adaptation and personalization, existing approaches in several research communities are of significant interest. Intelligent interfaces that take advantage of context and assist in user tasks have been actively researched. Multimodal approaches incorporate multiple input modalities for user interaction. Incorporating influential factors or allowing users to tailor the interface based on their preferences improves their performance on tasks. Addressing accessibility issues remove interface obstacles for disadvantaged users. Systematic incorporation of these approaches will clearly improve 3DUIs in terms of performance, subjectivity and access.

Within the domain of this workshop, the following topics in 3D user interfaces include, but are not limited to:

* Application areas for adaptive and personalized interaction
* Intelligent user interfaces
[More...] Mon, 05 Jan 2009 08:00:00 +0100http://eventseer.net/e/9092/37800/21st international conference on scientific and statistical database management (SSDBM 2009) http://eventseer.net/e/8831/37799/Call for Papers
21st International Conference on
Scientific and Statistical Database Management
http://dais.cs.uiuc.edu/ssdbm09
June 2-4, 2009
Hotel Monteleone, New Orleans, Louisiana USA

The SSDBM conference series focuses on concepts, tools, and techniques for scientific and statistical database applications. The Web is rapidly developing towards an environment that is physically distributed; control decentralised and run by self-motivated software systems. This provides a unique and exciting opportunity that could potentially revolutionise entirely the conventional ways of doing business.

In parallel, the Internet has attracted a critical mass of subscriptions, from both businesses and individuals, where the Internet is used for information exchange, facilitating collaboration and cooperation, and carrying out e-Commerce and e-Business activities. Virtual organisations and automated e-commerce operations are a reality today. However, true autonomous trading systems that have full decision-making power rather than limited pre-determined operations are not available yet.

What are the relevant business and technological obstacles in achieving this? What are the make and break factors? What business intelligences are needed in such autonomous business systems? What types of system architecture are suitable for facilitating and encouraging such autonomous business systems? Can supply chain be fully automated? Are trust and security issues an obstacle for such automated systems? What are the existing technologies that one can draw on to overcome these obstacles? Can semantics-based technologies capture and enrich the relevant business knowledge thus enhance the decision making power and capabilities of such autonomous systems? Are (logical) reasoning mechanisms helpful? If so, what are their strengths and weakness? What types of system architectures are suitable, e.g. from a complete peer to peer architecture to a tightly (controlled) controlled systems, for creating ideal electronic environment for a virtual e-commerce market? RFID systems consist of tiny integrated circuits equipped with antennas (RFID tags) that communicate with their reading devices (RFID readers) using radio-frequency waves without line of sight. This creates tremendous opportunities for linking various objects from real world. These objects are numbered, identified, cataloged, and tracked. RFID systems present many advantages and features that cannot be found in other ubiquitous computing environments. RFID communication is fast, convenient and its application can substantially save time, improve services, reduce labor cost, thwart product counterfeiting and theft, increase productivity gains and maintain quality standards. Common applications range from highway toll collection, supply chain management, public transportation, controlling building access, animal trac!
king, developing smart home appliances and remote keyless entry for automobiles to locating children. In addition, RFID technology also offers a viable approach to implement physical user interfaces. The services available in the local environment are advertised by RFID tags. Users browse the services and activate the desired service by simply touching the corresponding tag with a mobile terminal that is equipped with an RFID reader. In the near future, these user interfaces would introduce RFID tags into our everyday lives.

While RFID provides promising benefits such as inventory visibility and business process automation, some significant challenges need to be overcome before these benefits can be realized. One important issue is how to process and manage RFID data, which is typically in large volume, noisy and unreliable, time-dependent, dynamically changing, and of varying ownership. Another issue is how to seamlessly integrate low-level RFID data into (existing) enterprise information infrastructures (e.g., upper-level business processes). Finally, RFID systems present a number of inherent vulnerabilities with serious potential security implications. Indeed, given the ability of inexpensively tagging and thus monitoring a large number of items and/or people, RFID raises some serious security and privacy concerns. RFID systems are vulnerable to a broad range of malicious attacks ranging from passive eavesdropping to active interference. RFID privacy and security are stimulating research are!
as that involve rich interplay among many disciplines, such as signal processing, hardware design, supply-chain logistics, privacy rights, and cryptography.

The workshop's objective is to provide a forum for researchers, practitioners, and users to exchange new ideas, developments, and experience on issues related to this emerging field.

Topics of Interest
----------------------
We welcome papers that focus on novel RFID technologies and applications.
